This Week in Conan

Conan interview in New York Post

New York Post - May 31, 2006
[from “Same Sex Marriage in Court” by Cindy Adams]

CONAN. Ask not Conan who. Like there's maybe another Conan? Conan Schwartz? Conan Zito? Hosting this year's Emmys. In the countdown to take over Leno's job. So how big a shot is Conan O'Brien really?

"I'm up 7:30. Play with my two kids, hit the gym, get to work 10:30 every day. Then I go home 8 p.m.-ish to my wife and family. I'm boring. I just work hard at making my show good. Some days you don't feel like doing it, but the audience helps. I'm an emotionally needy Irish guy. I need these laughs. Comedians make a living off what should be treated."

"I'm a very polite person. I find special treatment embarrassing. If I'm given a restaurant table before others ahead of me, I get queasy because then those people are mad at me. I remember my $350-a-month apartment in L.A. No perks then. Now, when I don't need it, it's free goody gift bags. With my guests, I learned that big people are the nice ones. Bruce Springsteen shows up early and hangs around the halls. It's the new ones getting their first taste that want us to book them a massage and keep the limo the whole night."

"The system doesn't work. These days I have a magnificent Central Park West apartment, but with my kids there's strollers everywhere. No room for anything. Co-op boards and construction with their no-work Saturdays and 10-to-4-only rules nearly did me in, so I hate moving again, but at some point I'll have to."

Conan the Simple and I visited in some small airless empty NBC room off a hall. He was in a brown suit, long legs propped on a table, butt in a high camp chair. I asked about the coming Leno takeover.

"It's only a little over two years from now," he said, like he knew it to the hour and second. "Look, I've been funny since I was born. I won't be a different Conan O'Brien. You can't change your sense of humor. I'll just do my show. If there is any change, it'll be intuitive. I know if I do a charity event I tailor stuff to that event, so it might be that kind of thing. Your mind makes adjustments you're not aware of."

Official Andy Barker website

NBC has put up the official Andy Barker, PI website for the new comedy starring Andy Richter and written/produced by Conan O’Brien and Jonathan Groff.
The site includes a synopsis, video preview, and a list of cast/credits.

Show News

New Late Night Bumpers Website

A fan has created a new website with high quality bumpers (images that appear after commercial breaks) from the original high definition broadcasts and information about many of the bumpers' origins. The site will be updated as new bumpers are aired:

Conan HD Bumper Gallery

More bumpers can be found at Conan-OBrien.net and the Late Night with Conan O’Brien Picture Archive.

Late Night chat room

We have set up a Late Night chat room by suggestion from a site visitor. If you want to check it out, the best time is weeknights 12:35-1:35 am eastern daylight time! There is also a link to the chat room on the main Conan-OBrien.net site.

Pender & LaBamba's leave of absence

It was revealed on the Tuesday, June 6th show that Mark "Love Man" Pender and Richie "LaBamba" Rosenberg are on tour with Bruce Springsteen, and thus two other musicians are filling in on Late Night. According to brucespringsteen.net, Bruce's five-week North American tour with the Seeger Sessions Band kicked off April 30 in Boston. Springsteen and the Seeger Sessions Band are scheduled to be on Late Night on June 23rd. The Max Weinberg 7 looks odd minus the fedora!

Late Night Ratings

The following is an excerpt from "Jay and Conan Rule the May Sweep", NBC Universal, June 2, 2006--

NBC's late-night lineup once again ruled the May sweep. "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" dominated the May sweep at 12:35 a.m. ET, defeating CBS' "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" by a 47 percent margin in 18-49 and 134 percent in adults 18-34.

Conan extended his undefeated streak to 46 sweep wins without a loss.

"Late Night" also outscored Letterman in the valuable adult 18-34 category for the May sweep (712,000 viewers vs. 628,000) despite Conan's later start time. Conan has delivered bigger 18-34 audiences than Letterman for the last six weeks in a row.

"Late Night" has defeated "Late Late Show" competition for 554 weeks in a row, in a streak that dates back to the week of July 24-28, 1995. Conan has won 46 sweep months in a row, 45 consecutive quarters and 12 straight television seasons. Conan has finished #1 on 166 of 170 nights so far this broadcast year in 18-49 (including five ties) and 158 of 170 in total viewers versus regular competition.

For the May 2006 sweep, Conan averaged 1.370 million adults 18-49 to Ferguson's 935,000, 2.478 million viewers overall to Ferguson's 2.017 million and 712,000 adult 18-34 viewers to Ferguson's 304,000.

(Ratings reflect "live plus same day" data unless otherwise noted. Season-to-date and May sweep figures are averages of live-only results through Dec. 25 and "live plus seven day" data since then, except for the two most recent weeks, which are live plus same day.)

Conan's Goddessconansgoddess on June 7th, 2006 03:55 pm (UTC)
haha, yes! They deserve to be squashed.
Morgan, Mason, Matthew and Modine: urkelmyourself on June 7th, 2006 05:53 pm (UTC)
when Conan announced LaBamba and Pender's absences i thought to myslef, "but Mark Pender has never missed a show!!" and thought someone here in the magical land of the internet would make reference to it but no one did. you know, for trivia's sake.

Re: trivia
I haven't seen every episode, so I don't know if Pender has missed a show or not. Did LaBamba miss a show when Pender didn't?

Re: trivia
i don't know.

Re: trivia
Oh, I see. Yeah I've never seen an episode without the Love Man or the LaBamba either. ;) It was definitely visually shocking when they showed the full band and Pender and LaBamba weren't there!

I'm actually kind of surprised Craig Ferguson gets THAT many viewers. Maybe it's just leftovers from the Letterman audience. I NEVER hear him mentioned along will all of the other talk show hosts. And I've never heard someone say that they like him.
Conan's Goddessconansgoddess on June 7th, 2006 07:39 pm (UTC)
I've heard people say they prefer Ferguson. From the few minutes of Ferguson I've seen, I like Conan better. I'm too into Conan to even give Ferguson a chance.

I've been a die-hard Conan fan since 7th grade, 7 years, and in between commercials I'll watch Craig Ferguson. Sure his show isn't as diverse or creative as Conan, but it's pretty funny.
I heard him on NPR and he said he just does whatever he wants. He knows he can't compete with anyone else so he just goes out and has fun. Sometimes he'll just have a one-sided conversation with the audience instead on lame monologue jokes.
He's a funny guy. Don't slam him because you watch Conan.
I like Craig, but love Conan.
Gilli: conan/andersondreamsind1g1tal on June 8th, 2006 07:14 am (UTC)
I wasn't slamming him. I was just saying that I was surprised that he gets as many viewers as he does because I never hear him mentioned anywhere. It always seems that people forget about him. I never said I didn't like him. And I never said anything bad about him. I've never watched his show so I wouldn't know.

Thanks for being excited about it! xD

Wait, has Max left too? He should have, shouldn't he? I haven't seen the show in a few weeks.
Conan's Goddessconansgoddess on June 7th, 2006 09:49 pm (UTC)
No I don't think he's a member of the Seeger Sessions Band. According to brucespringsteen.net,

"In addition to Springsteen on vocals, guitar and harmonica, the US tour dates for the Seeger Sessions Band will comprise the following lineup: Sam Bardfeld (violin), Art Baron (tuba), Frank Bruno (guitar), Jeremy Chatzky (upright bass), Larry Eagle (drums), Charles Giordano (accordion, keyboards), Curtis King (vocals), Greg Liszt (banjo), Lisa Lowell (vocals), Eddie Manion (sax), Cindy Mizelle (vocals), Mark Pender (trumpet), Marty Rifkin (pedal steel guitar), Richie "La Bamba" Rosenberg (trombone), Patti Scialfa (vocals), Marc Anthony Thompson (vocals) and Soozie Tyrell (violin)."

So yes, Max is still doing Late Night. lol
